About River Hills
A Little River Masterpiece
Nestled along the famed Highway 17 “golf corridor” in the historic seaside village of Little River, South Carolina, River Hills Golf & Country Club delivers a one-of-a-kind experience that’s both distinctive and affordable—making it a standout along the Grand Strand.
Since opening in 1989, River Hills has earned widespread recognition, including a nomination for Best New Course by Golf Digest and a spot in Golfweek’s Top 50 in the Southeast. The course is known for its rolling hills—an uncommon feature in coastal Carolina—along with its natural beauty, Southern charm, superb conditions, friendly service, and exceptional value.
Designed by renowned architect Tom Jackson, River Hills exemplifies his signature style: courses that look more intimidating than they play. That theme shines through in holes like the memorable par-4 14th, featured in The 100 Greatest Holes Along the Grand Strand, and the iconic par-5 17th, the course’s signature hole, with its double dogleg and two water carries.
A renovation in 2003 made River Hills more approachable while preserving its dramatic visual appeal. Jackson himself describes the par-72 layout as “modern in concept, yet traditional in nature… a pleasing blend of old and new design ideas unlike any other course at the beach.” He still visits River Hills regularly to tee it up on one of his favorite designs.
Surrounded by towering hardwoods and natural wetlands, River Hills is also home to a vibrant wildlife ecosystem—offering golfers a chance to spot a surprising variety of birds and animals as they make their way through this scenic, challenging, and rewarding course.

River Hills Golf Club
A Tom Jackson Signature CourseTom Jackson has built over 100 golf courses, about 45 of which are located in the Carolinas, and all of which are considered masterpieces of design. River Hills is one of seven Tom Jackson golf courses in the Grand Strand.
Hailing from Westchester, Pennsylvania, Tom Jackson has settled with his wife in upstate Greenville, South Carolina. Jackson studied at State University of New York and the University of Georgia, earning an architecture degree in 1965, with a solid grounding in land planning and site development. He realized that designing golf courses was the best way for him to indulge his love of the outdoors.
After sending out many applications, only Robert Trent Jones responded, hiring Jackson to build courses in Puerto Rico. Later, Jackson worked for George W. Cobb before striking out on his own in 1971, creating Tom Jackson Golf, based in Greenville.
Jackson soon began winning awards for his design work. He learned the wisdom of co-designing alongside a professional tour player, most notably World Golf Hall of Famer Raymond Floyd. For some time, he worked in partnership with his sons, who have since left the family company. (In 1992, Thomas R. Jackson, Jr., founded a golf course construction firm in Taylors, South Carolina, north of Greenville.)
Tom Jackson was named to the Carolinas Golf Hall of Fame in 2007. Now he keeps his hand in by taking on less frequent and smaller projects, including renovations of his own courses and those of other designers. And he enjoys playing golf on his own courses, where he always receives a special welcome.
